What is being tested?
HIV, human immunodeficiency virus, is the virus that causes AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome), which destroys the immune system and leaves the body vulnerable to debilitating infections. This test detects HIV antibodies in the blood. Antibodies to HIV are produced by the body and can be detected in the blood about 2 to 4 weeks after exposure to the virus.
HIV Screen with Western Blot Confirmation is an additional test performed if your HIV antibody test results are positive. This ensures that the original positive result is 100% accurate. MedExpress Labs is required by law to perform this confirmation test if the original antibody test result is postive. This additional screening is required by law.
How is the sample collected for testing?
A blood sample is obtained by injecting a needle into a vein in the arm.
