Paternity Info: Can I bring in items instead of an actual person to be tested?
You can bring in items referred to as non-standard samples to be tested. A non-standard sample is anything other than a buccal (cheek) swab. A non-standard sample can be a baby bottle, hair with the root, toothbrush, floss, a discarded condom or any other item that may contain a person’s DNA. However, please be aware that there is no guarantee that DNA can be extracted from any item other than a cheek swab. MedExpress Labs will not refund the cost of the testing if it proves unusable. Each non-standard sample after two is $75 each. Please store all non-standard samples in a clean white envelope. DO NOT store or transport items in plastic as it can destroy the DNA through the growth of bacteria.
Paternity Info: Can I do a paternity test if some of the parties live in a different area?
If not all parties live in the area, DNA testing can still be done. For Peace of Mind, we will mail the kits to the parties outside the vicinity with instructions on how to collect a correct buccal (cheek) swab. They simply mail the specimens back to you or us and we send all samples together to our lab. If you require Chain of Custody, we can coordinate the collection of specimens through DNA Diagnostics . Simply call us and we can make the appropriate arrangements
Paternity Info: Do all parties have to be tested together?
MedExpress Labs does not require that all parties be tested together for Peace of Mind or Chain of Custody. But, we will hold all specimens until everyone has been tested before they are sent to our laboratory.
Paternity Info: Do I need to bring any special paperwork with me?
If you are doing a Chain of Custody DNA test you will need to provide a picture I.D. for all adults and a birth certificate or social security card for all minors. However, if a birth certificate or social security card is not available, MedExpress Labs can offer an alternative. However, if you doing a Peace of Mind DNA test, no identification or other paperwork is necessary.
Paternity Info: Does the Mother have to be tested?
It is not necessary for the mother to be tested. However, by evaluating her DNA in addition to the father’s, a more conclusive result is obtained
Paternity Info: How is the specimen collected?
No blood is required. We obtain DNA samples from a buccal (cheek) swab.
Paternity Info: How long does it take to get the results back?
Both the Chain of Custody and the Peace of Mind DNA test results take approximately 5 to 7 business days to come back. It takes an additional 2-3 business day to get the official paperwork for Chain of Custody tests. We do offer next business day results for the Chain of Custody testing for an additional fee of $320.
Paternity Info: How long is my DNA kept on file?
DNA samples are kept in the lab for approximately 90 days. Within that time your DNA can be used to test other parties for parentage, if the need arises. But, after 90 days if you require further testing using your DNA, you must submit a new DNA sample at our standard price.
Paternity Info: Is Immigration Testing available at MedExpress Labs?
MedExpress Labs can do Immigration DNA testing. Please call to make an appointment for this type of testing.
Paternity Info: Is the Peace of Mind test legally binding?
Peace of Mind DNA tests are not usually legally binding. Chain of Custody testing is the only DNA testing that most judges will accept. We recommend that you check with your attorney for verification on this matter.
Paternity Info: Isn't a home paternity test just as good as one that I would get at MedExpress Labs?
There are many companies that say you can get the same results from doing a DNA test in the privacy of your own home. However, the truth is there are many variables that can affect the accuracy of your results. That is why we recommend that you have a trained professional obtain the DNA specimen whenever possible. Remember not all DNA tests are the same
Paternity Info: Payment: Can I pay the difference between a Peace of Mind test and a Chain of Custody test after I get the results?
Because the Chain of Custody and Peace of Mind testing follow two separate procedures, it is not possible to pay the difference between the two tests once you have obtained the Peace of Mind results. The Chain of Custody DNA testing must be done separately and all DNA samples must be re-taken.
Paternity Info: Payment: Can we split the cost of the testing?
It is possible to divide the cost of testing between the two adult parties. However, please be aware that no specimens will be sent to the lab until payment has been made in full.
Paternity Info: Payment: Do you have a payment plan?
MedExpress Labs does not have a payment plan system in place. All fees are expected to be paid in full at the time of service.
Paternity Info: What is a Non-Standard Sample?
Paternity Info: What is the difference between Chain of Custody and Peace of Mind?
The Chain of Custody DNA test is admissible in court. You will be required to provide state issued identification as well as a finger print and current picture. Your finger print and picture will be obtained at our facility. You will receive official paperwork that can then be used for child custody, child support and other court proceedings. Our Peace of Mind DNA test is for discovery purposes only: meaning that it will help you find out the parentage of your child but the results cannot be used in a court of law.
STD Info: Can I be anonymous?
MedExpress Labs respects our patient's privacy and so we provide the ability for anyone to remain anonymous. You will be assigned a number instead of using your name, thus protecting your anonymity. We do require a correct birthdate in order to process your results properly, however.
STD Info: Do I have to give blood for STD test?
Gonorrhea and Chlamydia are urine tests. All other STD tests require that you give a blood specimen. This is done by injecting a needle into a vein in the arm. It is a simple and painless procedure.
STD Info: Do you test for HPV?
HPV or the Human Papillomavirus cannot be detected through a urine or blood test at this time. It is diagnosed by swabbing the genital area. MedExpress Labs does not currently have the facilities to provide that type of test.
STD Info: How long do the results of an STD test take to come back?
Between Monday and Thursday before noon your results will be back within 24 to 48 hours depending on what you have tested. However, if you come in between Thursday afternoon and Saturday your results can take up to 72 hours. Our Herpes testing is done at an outside lab and consequently takes longer to return results. Rapid HIV testing takes 10 – 15 minutes and is completed while you wait at our facility.
STD Info: How soon can I get tested after I think I have been exposed?
We recommend that you wait at least 3 days before being tested to allow the body to begin producing antibodies to any infection. The CDC also recommends that if you are being tested for HIV that you return within 3 to 6 months for a confirmation test of a negative result. This will allow the body to produce enough detectable antibodies if an infection is present.
STD Info: What are the symptoms of an STD?
STD symptoms are varied depending on the type. Chlamydia, for example, has no symptoms and Herpes can lay dormant without symptoms for years. For a complete list of symptoms and warning signs for each STD please visit the Centers for Disease Control’s website at www.cdc.gov
STD Info: What do I do if I test positive for an STD?
If you test positive for any STD, MedExpress Labs strongly encourages you to seek advice and treatment from a licensed healthcare professional. If you do not have a physician, we can provide you with resources to find one.
STD Info: What does it mean when a test "screens for antibodies"?
When the body is exposed to an infection, its immediate response is to produce antibodies that begin to fight the foreign invasion. When an STD test is described as “screening for antibodies” it means that the test is looking for the specific antibodies that the body produces to fight the disease. If it detects antibodies you either have an infection or may have had an infection in the past. Please be mindful of the fact that STD’s do not cure themselves, but once the body produces those antibodies they do not disappear. So, if you were treated for a past infection your body will still show antibodies for that STD. However, if your test shows reactive (positive) for antibodies to any STD, MedExpress Labs strongly encourages you to seek immediate medical treatment to diagnose and/or verify your infection status.
STD Info: What is a PCR test?
A PCR test stands for polymerase chain reaction. Simply put, this test takes a few copies of a piece of DNA of a disease and then makes thousands to millions of copies of that DNA. This then allows the diagnostician to detect the DNA of a particular disease more easily and with more certainty with just a very small sample.
